Sudden Unexplained (or Unexpected) Infant Death (SUID) is applied to the death of an infant when after a thorough investigation to include a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene and a complete review of the infants medical history that no definitive cause is discovered leading to the infants death.  Most SUIDs are reported as one of three types of infant deaths 1.  SIDS 2.  Unexplained 3.  Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed  Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old.  SIDS is sometimes known as crib death because the infants often die in their cribs. Although the exact cause is unknown, it appears that SIDS may be associated with abnormalities in the portion of an infant’s brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep.  Physical factors that can be associated with SIDS are items such as brain abnormalities, low birth weight and respiratory infection.  Sleep environment factors can also be an agent to an increased risk of SIDS.  These factors include an infant sleeping on the stomach or side instead of being placed on their back, sleeping on a soft surface or having toys and blankets in close proximity to the infant and of course sleeping with parents.  While an infant sleeping in the same room as adults is beneficial, do not ever have an infant sleep in the same bed as you.  Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic with some great information on SIDS and reducing the risk for your child Here is another from healthy kids org
