MALE  AGE  21  AND  OVER
WEIGHT IN POUNDS
We at the Jackson Parish Coroner’s Office feel that we should be proactive in educating our youth and parents to the extreme danger of driving while drunk or impaired.  To help let young people as well as adults experience the affect that alcohol has on a person’s reflexes, judgement and the difficulty of operating automobiles or boats we are developing a program to meet this end.  We have obtained goggles that when worn give the same effect as being drunk.  We have them rated at .02, .06 and plastered to show how difficult it is to do simple tasks such as walking heel to toe on a taped line, catching a small ball with your hand and retrieving a small (not tiny) object from the floor. Also having to read an easy book.  To help show the aftermath of drunk driving resulting in deaths we have 3 different c.d.’s that we can show of tragic fatalities caused by drunk driving and how it has affected the lives of survivors as well as the lives of those that caused the wreck. We have a set of impairment goggles that will give the effect of being high on drugs which is becoming more prevalent on our highways. We also have a c.d. that deals with the extreme danger associated with texting while driving.  Texting while driving is illegal here in the state of Louisiana but each and every day that we are on our highways we routinely see driving and texting as well as driving while talking on the telephone. We will have this available to our schools, civic organizations, church youth groups, service organizations and anyone wanting to share the dangers of drunk driving. As we look forward to fully developing our program we feel that right now it can best be presented and have hands on experience with the Drunk Buster Goggles in a group of 10 to 20 participants. As there are some graphic images in our presentation we also feel that the ages for participants will be 14 - Adult. The question is often asked, “how much can I drink and not be subject to a DUI?”   Here are a couple of charts that show the number of drinks, persons body weight and what their BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) would be.  1 drink is considered to be 1.25 oz. of 80 proof liquor, 12 oz of beer or 5 oz of table wine.  Also note, in Louisiana an individual under the age of 21 will get a DUI with a BAC of .02  For anyone over 21 a BAC of .08 will get you a DUI.
